Advent 2012-2013!

It has been a great season of anticipation! Throughout these weeks of Advent, we have read his stories, sang the Christmas songs, drew pictures of the verses and had rich conversations. Each week we kept it simple using the guide below. The Season of Advent – December 2-December 24 1. December 2-8 – Prophecy – Isaiah 9:2-7 God Card Christmas – I believe Father God is a generous giver of great gifts. 2. December 9-15 – Bethlehem – Micah 5:2-5 God Card Muscle – I believe Father God is strong for me. 3. Getting Ready for Advent 2012-2013!

Advent is a time of anticipation and actually means “coming.” We are anticipating the promise of Father God found in the book of Isaiah. His name is Jesus. “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Through Father’s gift of Jesus, we no longer live under the law but are freed up to live a grace-filled life of “rest” (Isaiah 11:10). “Christmas is saying ‘yes’ to something beyond all emotions and feelings. Christmas is saying ‘yes’ to a hope based on God’s initiative, which has nothing to do with what I think or feel. Christmas is believing that the salvation of the world is God’s work and not mine. Things will never look just right or feel just right. If they did, someone would be lying. The world is not whole, and today I experienced this fact in my own unhappiness. But it is into this broken world that a child is born who is called the Son of the Most High, Prince of Peace, Savior.” Henri Nouwen in The Road to Daybreak Christmas carries a weight of expectation and opportunity! God “holds our hand!” (God card #19)

One of the brilliant things that has begun happening with our God card conversations is the kids have started leading our conversations. On this day, Ada chose the God card and worked out what we were going to do! You can see her plan in the picture above. It was a rich time! I also hope for your family that it is yet another reminder of the simplicity of the God cards but the depth of the conversation. For Ada to lead creates a deeper understanding for her of this truth, and a “value” that they all place on the content, because they can choose and be in charge. It is a “win-win” all around! Be sure and look closely at the picture above. She...

So, you have purchased the God cards and looked over the handy poster that comes with them. You read the introduction, agreed with the importance of this endeavor and attempted to understand the “Getting Started” section, but you still aren’t quite sure how this works. So, I want to give you a picture of how it fleshed out in the Hagan house – step by step using the “Getting Started” section from the God cards poster to guide us along the way. It is one thing to tell you how to do it, but another thing to show you the Hagan people really doing it! And you will see we often take detours depending on the moment and what is interesting to...
