“Raising Compelled Children not Compliant Children!”

The Story cards along with the God and Me cards are first our own experience of redemption and rescue. Father God loved us, saved us, spoke to us and won. He thinks about us, looks for us, tells us in terms that we get it, puts his arms around us, kisses us on the forehead, calls us by a new name and includes us in his family. This is the truth of the Bible! If you sift through all of those big words of systematic theology and if you read for yourself the words in the Bible, this is the story you get. And that language, the language of a story, motivates me. It draws me, and I want to respond. Much of the spiritual formation or Christian curriculum out there fills your...

“The Story behind the Story cards”

If you have taken a look at the Story cards, you might think I am a bit wordy. And while this is a true statement if you know me, I think it is necessary for the situation. What is the situation you might ask? Here it is: I am a parent, and I believe the Bible. And I want to teach my children the story of the Bible in a structure that gives the breadth of this truth in words that they understand and also motivates them to want to know more. But I also need it simple, because I am crazy and tired and just trying my best to make sure everyone has on clean clothes and has been fed today. We are still working it out, but we are having some amazing conversations at the...

“Our word for 2013 – confidence!” (evaluate)

We never plan it; we just start praying into it. Once Advent starts, we start praying and asking Father for our word for the year. We involve the kids and have some great conversations as things come up throughout the season. We are watching and listening. We have been doing a “word for the year” for 5 years now. And it is always such a cool adventure to watch Father give us his focus for the year. “Confidence” came on our way to Colorado this past week. As we were making the long drive from Arlington to Breckenridge, I began thinking about the drive to Breckenridge last year and what had changed in me. How was I different? How was our family...

Advent 2012-2013!

It has been a great season of anticipation! Throughout these weeks of Advent, we have read his stories, sang the Christmas songs, drew pictures of the verses and had rich conversations. Each week we kept it simple using the guide below. The Season of Advent – December 2-December 24 1. December 2-8 – Prophecy – Isaiah 9:2-7 God Card Christmas – I believe Father God is a generous giver of great gifts. 2. December 9-15 – Bethlehem – Micah 5:2-5 God Card Muscle – I believe Father God is strong for me. 3. December 16-22 – Shepherds and Angels – Luke 2:8-20 God Card Shepherd – I believe Father God is a shepherd. 4. December 23-24 – Wise Men...

Getting Ready for Advent 2012-2013!

Advent is a time of anticipation and actually means “coming.” We are anticipating the promise of Father God found in the book of Isaiah. His name is Jesus. “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Through Father’s gift of Jesus, we no longer live under the law but are freed up to live a grace-filled life of “rest” (Isaiah 11:10). So, in these weeks of Advent, we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ and begin this next year in the foundation of our story. We have been bought with a price. We...
