In the middle of making coffee and emptying the dishwasher, one of my many thoughts was this: What card is this week? So, after I poured my cereal and found my place at the kitchen table, I opened up the Plan and for this week of February 3-9, the topic was God card #24 – Longs for our love! Ahhh. . . This is going to be a rich conversation. So, after all three little people living in our home woke up and had cereal of their own, we made our way into some conversation. We started our God card discussion like most. Everyone got out their Bibles. We read the God card title and talked about what it meant. Everyone looked up a verse from the card and read their verses....
Read MoreFor Journal this week, the kids had to pretend they were being interviewed about the Me cards. I created some questions and just asked them to write their responses. We have worked through the Me cards about 4 times now over the years. I thought it would be rich to see what they are getting and how they are processing! And I thought it would be great encouragement for you! So, here are some questions and the answers they wrote. 1. What are the Me cards? The Me cards simply tell you who you are in Christ. – Maya The Me cards are pictures of gifts that God gives us. – Carson The Me cards are our identity in Christ. – Ada 2. Where do they come from? The...
Read MoreAfter the 3rd “get-up” and last “tuck in” last night, I was reaching deep into my bag of tricks to find the thing that would comfort Maya’s crying eyes. Ron had left for Louisiana yesterday afternoon, and Maya was overcome with sadness and fear. “I just miss Daddy. I don’t feel comfortable when he is gone. Aren’t you scared all by yourself, Mommy? What if?” And so the conversation went – the 1st, 2nd and 3rd time. We hugged; we prayed; we talked logically through all the options; we hugged again. We even called Daddy. Finally, in desperation or identification, I gave Maya the idea of getting the God cards and...
Read MoreThe Story cards along with the God and Me cards are first our own experience of redemption and rescue. Father God loved us, saved us, spoke to us and won. He thinks about us, looks for us, tells us in terms that we get it, puts his arms around us, kisses us on the forehead, calls us by a new name and includes us in his family. This is the truth of the Bible! If you sift through all of those big words of systematic theology and if you read for yourself the words in the Bible, this is the story you get. And that language, the language of a story, motivates me. It draws me, and I want to respond. Much of the spiritual formation or Christian curriculum out there fills your...
Read MoreIf you have taken a look at the Story cards, you might think I am a bit wordy. And while this is a true statement if you know me, I think it is necessary for the situation. What is the situation you might ask? Here it is: I am a parent, and I believe the Bible. And I want to teach my children the story of the Bible in a structure that gives the breadth of this truth in words that they understand and also motivates them to want to know more. But I also need it simple, because I am crazy and tired and just trying my best to make sure everyone has on clean clothes and has been fed today. We are still working it out, but we are having some amazing conversations at the...
